MindTrack

A journey to a sharper mind

Our project

MindTrack is a college project developed with the intention of making cognitive games more enjoyable, accessible, cohesive, and informative.

It's enjoyable because you can test your abilities in the five major cognitive areas - Attention, Coordination, Memory, Perception, and Reasoning - through engaging, fast-paced games. You can compare your results with other players and witness your scores improving over time.

It's accessible because there's no paywall for any of our services, including the analyses and results after playing the games. We believe that a project based on data provided by the community has the moral responsibility to give its conclusions back in return.

It's cohesive because we conducted extensive research to determine the games that would best test your cognitive capabilities. This means that all our tests are based on actual studies conducted by the scientific community to better evaluate users as a whole.

It's informative because one of our main ambitions is to deeply analyze all the data gathered through these tests. We aim to present interesting and well-thought-out results that address all the questions asked, and make all of this information open and easy for you to read. However, we are still in the process of developing this final part. Rest assured that we have a highly skilled team working on it, and we will provide more information as soon as possible.

This project was made by Luís F. Laguardia, Tiago Barradas and Maisa Fraiz. To know even more regarding MindTrack, you can access our video teaser and paper here.

Our research

Our tests were heavily inspired by CogniFit, a digital healthcare service designed to support the evaluation of an individual's cognitive well-being. More specifically, our games were influenced by the following tests: Equivalencies Test INH-REST, Simultaneity Test DIAT-SHIF, Concentration Test VISMEM-PLAN, Estimation Test EST-I and VIPER-PLAN Programming Test.

We have developed five games, each designed to assess specific cognitive abilities: Attention, Coordination, Memory, Perception, and Reasoning. While the names assigned to the games reflect the primary ability they target, it's worth noting that many of them encompass multiple cognitive domains.

Here is the study behind each test:

GAME #1 - ATTENTION

Attention is the ability to selectively filter out distractions and concentrate on important information.

This test was based on the Stroop Test, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology (Stroop, 1935). In this game, you will be able to test the following attention capabilities:

Inhibition - the ability to restrain or regulate impulsive responses, employing attention and reasoning to generate appropriate responses.

Updating - the ability to monitor one's actions and behavior while performing a task, ensuring that it aligns with the intended plan of action.

GAME #2 - COORDINATION

Coordination is the ability to execute precise and well-organized movements with efficiency.

In this game, you will test the following coordination capabilities:

Hand-eye coordination - the ability in performing activities that use both the hands and eyes.

Response Time - the time between perceiving a stimulus and initiating a corresponding response.

In addition, you will also be able to test one attention capability:

Divided Attention - the ability to focus on different stimuli at the same time.

And one perception (the meaning of perception will be explained shortly) capability:

Visual Perception - the ability to interpret and make sense of information derived from the effects of visible light as it reaches the eye.

GAME #3 - MEMORY

Memory is the ability to retain and utilize newly acquired information, as well as retrieve memories from the past.

This test was based on the Corsi block-tapping test (Corsi, 1972; Kessels et al., 2000; Wechsler, 1945). In it, you will test the following memory capabilities:

Short Term Memory - the ability to temporarily hold a limited amount of information for a short period of time.

Visual Short Term Memory - the ability to temporarily hold a limited amount of visual information for a short period of time.

Working Memory - a type of short term memory, this is the ability to store and manipulate temporary information, facilitating the execution of more complex cognitive tasks

You will also test one perception capability:

Spatial Perception - the ability to assess and comprehend the arrangement or organization of objects and elements within a given space.

And one reasoning (the meaning of reasoning will be explained shortly) capability:

Planning - the ability to anticipate and mentally prepare for the appropriate execution of a task by considering various aspects and potential outcomes.

GAME #4 - PERCEPTION

Perception is the ability to interpret and make sense of the sensory input received from the environment.

This game tests the following perception capability:

Estimation - the ability to asses the situation and make predictions about, in this case, speed.

GAME #5 - REASONING

Reasoning is the ability to effectively utilize and manipulate information obtained through various sensory channels.

This game is inspired by the Porteus Maze test (Porteus, 1950) and it tests the following reasoning capacities:

Planning - the ability to anticipate and mentally prepare for the appropriate execution of a task by considering various aspects and potential outcomes.

And the following perception capacities:

Spatial Perception - the ability to assess and comprehend the arrangement or organization of objects and elements within a given space.

Visual Scanning - the ability to swiftly and effectively locate relevant information in our surroundings through active visual exploration
